Electric Avenue: TLC Drivers Take the Green Road to a Sustainable Future

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has announced that they will be issuing 1,000 electric vehicle (EV) licenses, with 600 of those licenses being exclusively available to individual TLC-licensed drivers.

This announcement is a significant move towards achieving the city's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by transitioning to a fully electric taxi and for-hire vehicle fleet.

The TLC has set strict eligibility requirements for drivers who want to apply for one of the 600 EV licenses. To qualify, a driver must have an active TLC Driver license, but cannot currently have an active For-Hire Vehicle license. The driver must also have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) in their name and a valid email address that will be used to communicate throughout the application process.

 A valid e-mail address (This email will be used to communicate with you throughout the application process).

Drivers who meet the eligibility requirements must fill out and submit a Statement of Interest form, which will be available on the TLC website beginning March 15, 2023. The 600 EV licenses will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis, and eligible drivers will receive an email with a unique authorization code and instructions on how to complete the application process.

120 Days to buy an EV

Once a driver receives the eligibility email about the application process, they will have 120 days to purchase an EV and begin the application process. The process starts with the driver affiliating with a TLC Licensed Base, which will submit a request (a Base Affirmation) to TLC to begin the vehicle licensing process.

For those who are not eligible for the 600 EV licenses, there will be an additional 400 EV licenses available to anyone (including drivers), with applicants limited to 25 licenses per Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN). The Statement of Interest form for the 400 licenses will be available later in March.

For TLC drivers who are interested in buying an EV, it is important to research different models to find one that fits their needs and budget. Some factors to consider when choosing an EV include range, charging time, and cost. Drivers should also research available incentives, such as tax credits or rebates, which can help offset the cost of purchasing an EV.
